Abstract

The major worry with the environmental impacts due to industrial production pass trough alternative studies for the production of ethylene glycols, because the classic method, ethoxylation reaction between an epoxide and ROH group, consumes a lot of energy and water, a vital resource for our society. These glycols are very important because they are used as raw materials for various industrial products, with great economic interest. The alternative route to synthesize this glycols is producing a carbonate through cycloaddition reaction between CO2 and an epoxide. The formed carbonate is used in an ethoxylation reaction to produce glycols. In this conditions it is not necessary the usage of excessive amounts of water to produce glycols. Both reactions are catalyzed. In this project we will use a new class of highly porous materials called Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), with organic and inorganic parts in its structure, this materials have a catalytic potential due to the presence of active metal centers and the possibility of modification of the organic linker, changing the pore sizes of the material. In this project we will synthesize Zirconium MOFs with fumaric acid and 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid as likers and the performance of this materials as catalysts in the cycloaddition and ethoxylation reactions.
