Depression and oral condition of patients with metabolic Syndrome

Abstract

Depression is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012, about 350 million people worldwide were carriers of this disorder. Similarly to depression, the Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is becoming increasingly common. Moreover, both depression as MetS are part of the setting of the obesity and are considered risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Regarding oral health, the association between some MetS components - particularly diabetes and obesity - and certain oral problems have been well documented. In addition, recent studies have shown the presence of relationship between oral diseases and mental disorders. Considering the high prevalence rates of depression, MetS, tooth decay and periodontal disease, the understanding of the relationship between these disorders may help in the prevention and treatment of them, besides reinforcing the importance of multidisciplinary approach to their carriers. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between the presence of dental diseases - dental caries and periodontal disease - and depression in a group of obese patients diagnosed with MetS accompanied by a multidisciplinary team of the Hospital Amaral Carvalho (HAC), located in the municipality of Jau - SP. For this, will be used secondary datas from medical and dental records, which are archived in HAC and the Faculty of Dentistry of Bauru (FOB-USP), respectively. Initially will be selected 150 patients diagnosed with MetS, which, after the collection of data on degree of depression, will be divided into two groups: with and without depression. In sequence, the information on dental caries and periodontal disease in these patients will be collected. For data analysis, absolute and relative frequencies, measures of position and dispersion will be used in addition to the correlation tests (Pearson and Spearman), Student t test, chi-square and Fisher exact. To evaluate the possible effects of confounding variables, regression models will be used. From the results found it is expected to observe the probable association between variables, contributing mainly to the strengthening of care for patients with these disorders through multidisciplinary teams.
