This project aims to examine how Graciliano Ramos conceived and presented the popular classes in their texts published between the years of 1937 and 1945. The documents chosen for this research are chronicles, reviews, literary criticism and published speeches, besides the correspondence exchanged by Graciliano Ramos since his arrest in 1936, until his affiliation to the communist party in 1945. Looking closely to this documental corpus, it is intended to understand the debates that were plotted and related to these classes in the context of culture and politics, passing by how the author understood the function of art, especially literature, always in constant dialogue with the policy developed by the Estado Novo. The searching for these relations also means pursuing the social networks woven by Ramos in the period, considering not only his own experiences into the intellectual environments of Rio de Janeiro, but also in the way he gave political significance to his own experience as a backwoodsman, to his time on jail, turning all of this on material for his writing.
