Biosensors are considered a powerful analytical tool for use as diagnostic/safety and security monitoring platforms. Biosensors function by biorecognition, which results in rapid and sensitive responses combining the selectivity of the biochemical reactions with operational simplicity. The use of nanotechnology associated to the construction of biosensors has been prominent in several research areas. Thus, this project is aimed at the design and development of novel nanocomposite materials based of distinct chemical composition, including nanoparticles and carbon nanomaterials for biosensor applications. We also intend to use these nanostructured materials as base material for inks, in order to obtain flexible biosensors, including BioFETs. The obtained materials will be characterized with various experimental techniques, including UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies, FTIR spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The performance of the biosensors will be evaluated using electrochemical techniques, e.g., cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and AC impedance measurements. The biosensors fabricated during the BEPE project will be applied to detect microorganisms and other analytes at ICN2-Spain. In addition, the techniques and methodologies learned by the candidate during the abroad post-doctoral period will also be employed in her Postdoctoral period in Brazil upon return. (AU)
