Abstract

Nowadays, different endodontic therapy modalities has been performed by clinicians, including, single and multiple sessions. It is known that chemo-mechanical (CMP) preparation by itself is not able to eliminate bacterial from root canal infection. Indeed, the search for a supplementary treatment protocol is of a concern in Endodontics. Particularly, the supplementary treatment using photodynamic therapy (PDT) is of a interest in the treatment of many diseases. The objectives of this study are: 1) to evaluate the ability of PDT supplementary treatment in optimizing bacterial disinfection from primarily infected root canals treated by single and multiple endodontic treatment sessions. 2) to investigate the ability of PDT in optimizing endotoxin removal from primarily infected root canals treated by single and multiple endodontic treatment sessions. Twenty-four primarily infected teeth will be selected and randomly divided in 2 groups: Single Session (SS-group) (=12) and Multiple-session (MS-group) (n=12) groups. Bacterial and endotoxin samplings will be performed by using sterile/ apyrogenic paper points at different times: Initial (IS), after CMP (CMPS), after PDT (PDTS); and particularly for the MS-group, after 14 days or Calcium hydroxide-based medicament + saline solution [Ca(OH)2 + SSL]. Bacterial culture techniques will be performed to determine bacterial CFU- count. KQL-test "Limulus Amebocyte Lysate-assay" will be used to determined the levels of endotoxins. Data will be tabulated and future analyzed by SPSS for Windows e package Statistica 9.0.
