Abstract

Brain iron accumulation plays a key role in several neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Friedreich ataxia. In this scenario, methods that enable in vivo identification and quantification of such deposits are extremely helpful in neurological practice. There are different MRI-based strategies to estimate iron deposition. T2*/T2 relaxometry is the most widely used technique and presents significant correlation with histological measurement of iron. However, a major limitation of relaxometry is that is not automatized and ROI-based.The main objective of this study is to develop a semi-automatic method to quantify the transverse relaxation times in a voxelwise approach. Afterwards, we will perform a clinical application of this method in patients with Friedreich ataxia. Our ultimate objective will be the search for new biomarkers to help both in the clinical follow-up and in the comprehension of neurodegenerative mechanisms rated to Friedreich ataxia. (AU)
