One-step glycerol oxidative dehydration is presented as an interesting alternative for the recovery of glycerol excess obtained as co-product in the biodiesel formation process. This proposal presents the development and the study of a process for the efficient transformation and enhancement of glycerol to acrylic acid using zeolite catalysts. Due to the acidic and oxidizing properties that arise with the isomorphic substitution of vanadium compared to aluminum in zeolites, the proposal involves the development of vanadosilicates where the active sites present bifunctional characteristics, i.e., in a first step dehydrate glycerol to acrolein and in a second stage oxidizes acrolein to obtain acrylic acid. Another important aspect is the use of the lamellar structures in these materials that enable greater accessibility to the active sites for the reactants. Among the lamellar materials highlights the ITQ-2 and ITQ-6, with MWW and FER structures respectively, which have catalytic performance highlighted in relation to the purely microporous zeolites and, therefore, will be the catalysts developed and investigated in this proposal. A broad set of techniques to unravel and understand the mechanisms of formation of vanadosilicates, their behavior as a catalyst in the reaction, the identification and functionality of the active sites will be applied to the materials. Structural, textural and surface characterizations will be performed and with this information will be possible establish, systematically, the synthesis operational conditions and the opitmized catalytic activity.
