Abstract

The deficiency of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase (D21OH) is the most common form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), responsible for over 90% of the cases of the classical form of the disease. With the improvement of the diagnosis and the implement of the treatment with replacement of corticosteroids, there was a large increase in patient survival, calling attention to the possible negative effects of the treatment of CAH throughout life. Although still few and heterogeneous, studies indicate that patients with CAH have increased risk of hypertension compared with normal individuals. Furthermore, several studies show that individuals with CAH have elevated body fat values. In this context, the aim of this project is to verify the relationship between body fat and blood pressure in patients with the classical form of CAH-D21OH. Patients with more than 15 years of age, of both sexes, with a diagnosis of CAH-D21OH and followed for at least two years in our clinic will be assessed. The group of patients will be compared to a control group without the disease. To determine the amount and distribution of body fat will be used dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and for the determination of the parameters of blood pressure, monitoring of blood pressure for 24 hours will be held.
