Peat bogs characterization in the Sorocá-Mirim River Basin, Ibiúna, SP

Abstract

This research will study the peat bogs found in the Ibiúna Plateau, which is a compartment of the Atlantic Plateau. The landforms in Ibiúna Plateau are strongly conditioned by geophysical structures. The area presents a humid climatic condition, with an annual average rainfall of 1,308.8 mm, and average temperatures below 20ºC. The peat bogs occur locally, being related to three fluvial environments: fluvial terraces, enclosed floodplains, and hanging floodplains. These environments would most likely be the agents controlling the differentiation and conditioning of the amount and type of the organic materials. The detailed study of those three environments and the characteristics of the materials associated to them will allow us to verify in which degree the type and amount of the organic materials are conditioned by the environments, contributing to the knowledge of the peat bogs in tropical zones.
