Abstract

The application of UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) in civilian missions is already common in big countries and is a growing tendency in Brazil. Aerial vehicles for civil applications usually are small and have physical limitations that may restrict, for instance, the range of the communication links, the area of flight and the flight autonomy. In this way, the use of multiple UAVs may result in more efficiency and even in better mission results. However, the communication between UAVs must be coordinated, and in many times, there is not an infrastructure to do that. Because of this fact the UAVs can communicate by an adhoc network, known as FANET (Flying Ad Hoc Network). Vehicles use broadcast technique to exchange localization data, avoid collisions and disseminate collected data. The ad hoc communication between these aerial vehicles brings new challenges that need to be studied, as the network routing problem, efficient data exchange and mainly the mitigation of the broadcast storm problem. Thus, in this research project it is proposed the implementation of algorithms known in other ad hoc mobile network models (MANETs), the adaptation or combination of those algorithms for the scenario of UAVs and an investigative study on the result of algorithms execution on Gumstix Overo, an embedded computer platform utilized in projects related to Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) communication.
