In 2007, the cross-sectional study called EPISONO revealed the sleep pattern of a representative sample from the city of São Paulo, showing a high prevalence of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia. To better clarify the burden that sleep disturbances lead to society, longitudinal studies have demonstrated a possible link between sleep and the risk of hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer and mortality. However, there are few studies, most with distinct populations and lacking a prospective assessment of sleep objectively. Therefore, the aim of this project is to evaluate prospectively the cohort originated by EPISONO study through investigation of the prognosis and frequency of complications among individuals who had sleep disturbances, changes in classification of the severity of these disorders and the incidence of new cases. All volunteers originally included in the baseline study will be invited to visit the Sleep Institute to answer the questionnaires and perform the polysomnography, actigraphy, blood collection for clinical analysis, blood pressure measurement, body assessment and pulmonary function. Statistical methods to evaluate estimates of variability and precision as well as the interval will employ methods of Taylor series linearization to avoid underestimation bias. For comparison between the baseline and follow up studies, technical analysis of pseudo-panels will be used, considering that the same population is studied.
