Abstract

We propose to experimentally study Bloch oscillations of ultracold atoms in a vertical onedimensional optical lattice under the action of gravitational acceleration. The atoms also interact with a unidirectionally pumped optical ring cavity whose vertical arm is collinear with the optical lattice. In certain parameter regimes, the feedback provided by the cavity light field on the optical lattice stabilizes the Bloch oscillations via a mode-locking mechanism and generates periodic bursts of light emitted into the counterpropagating cavity mode. While the light bursts provide a non-destructive monitor of the dynamics, the mode-locking steers the atoms to the lowest Bloch band, removes noise, and even supresses dephasing due to atom-atom interactions. All these features may be crucial for future improvements of the concept of atomic gravimeters based on recording Bloch oscillations. The post-doc will construct the experiment, detect, and characterize the mode-locking effect, and confirm the viability of the continuous monitoring scheme. The experiment will be operated with strontium atoms driven on their narrow intercombination line, which allows reaching the strong coupling regime with a macroscopic ring cavity. (AU)
