Absorption and desorption studies of hydrogen in MgH2 composites with palladium surface coating

Abstract

Materials like magnesium-based nanocomposites have been studied for hydrogen storage due to high storage capacity at relatively low temperatures and rapid kinetics of absorption and desorption. The MgH2 hydride presents high volumetric and gravimetric storage capacity, and thus meets the main requirements for the storage of H2, offering efficiency and safety. In recent years, research-based nanocomposite catalysts containing Mg surface has achieved great repercussion. In this research proposal, it is proposed to analyze the base MgH2 consolidated in tablet form (bulk) by the severe plastic deformation process materials, and coated with a monolayer of palladium, by vapor deposition (sputtered film) in order to avoid the presence of oxidation and water vapor and then contributing to faster absorption and desorption kinetics which should be contribute for technological applications in near future. The structural characterization will be performed by X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy and spectroscopy excited by X-ray photoelectron (XPS). The phase changes during heating are studied through analysis of patterns of X-ray diffraction analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The storage properties will be determined as well the kinetics behavior will be performed by using Sieverts apparatus.
