Portuguese translation and transcultural adaptation of the Appearance Schemas Inventory - Revised (ASI-R) and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS)

Abstract

Body image is the mental picture we have of the extent of the contours and shape of our bodies, and feelings related to these characteristics and the parts of our body. In Brazil, we still lack tools to assess this construct, so the work of translating and adapting is very important to extend the possibilities of research in this area in the country. The aim of this study is to translate into Portuguese and adapt two questionnaires to assess body image, the Appearance Schemas Inventory - Revised (ASI -R) and the Multidimensional Body- Self Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Scales (MBSRQ -AS) , for use in Brazil in men and women aged over 18 years. For the two instruments initially, three translations ( T1, T2, and T3 ) of the original instruments will be made. The translations will be summarized and a single version will be drafted. There will be a review of the synthesis by a committee composed of five experts in body image. In the review stage by the audience, participants will be recruited on the USP campus and guided by the researcher to answer the questionnaires and assess the clarity and level of difficulty in understanding the items. The reverse translation will be performed by two translators, different from those who carried out the first translation, native speakers of the original language of the instrument, English, and fluent speakers of Portuguese. The two translators will meet to make a joint assessment of TR1 and TR2 versions and compile a final synthesis, resulting in the reverse translation of the two instruments, which will be submitted for review by the author of the original instruments. Discriminant exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, criterion validity, convergent validity, and validity and reliability (test-retest and Cronbach's alpha). With the completion of the adaptation processes, the evaluation phase of the psychometric qualities of the scales will start.(AU)
