Abstract

The carcinoma of uterine cervix, also called cervical cancer, is the second type of world's most frequent neoplasm in women. Each year there are about 530 thousand new cases, being the fourth cause of death in developing countries, with approximately 275 thousand deaths per year. Treatment for cervical cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. However these methods are highly invasive and can cause injuries stranded with a significant aesthetic functional impairment. Because of this, some plants are being used in cancer treatment and one of them has awakened scientific interest, Piper cubeba, used in phytotherapeutic treatment of gonorrhea, dysentery, syphilis, abdominal pain, diarrhea, enteritis, asthma and tumors. According to the scale of the activity of antitumor lignans extracted from Piper cubeba, including their chemical elements, it was proposed the present study that evaluated the potential cytotoxic effect of lignans in neoplastic cells on the morphology, cytotoxicity, proliferation and cell migration. For this, it will be used the tumor cell line of uterine cervix, SiHa, after treatment with the five lignans (dihidrocubebina, hinoquinina, cubebina, etilcubebina and metilcubebina), all extracted from the seeds of Piper cubeba. So we can understand a little of the mechanisms and interactions of phytotherapic on cytotoxicity, cell proliferation and migration of tumorigenic cells.
