Punica granatum and denture stomatitis: in vitro study on the antimicrobial and anti-adherent effect against C. albicans

Abstract

The denture stomatitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease closely related immunosuppression and colonization by the fungus Candida albicans on the acrylic resin of total dentures, in the form of biofilms highly resistant to conventional treatments. Inherent factors to the material that manufactures the dentures, as well as cell surface characteristics of the fungus are related to greater or lesser adherence of these microorganisms on the surface of biomaterials. This becomes extremely important to find alternative antimicrobial therapies and without deleterious effects to the patients, as traditional drugs. In this context fit into the phytomedicines, in addition to the characteristics mentioned above, are less costly than the synthetic drugs. Thus, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the herbal action of Punica granatum on the Candida albicans. For that, the fungistatic and fungicide actions of phytomedicine on C. albicans will be evaluated by in vitro tests through the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Microbicide Concentration (MMC). The nonspecific adhesion of C. albicans, in the presence and absence of phytomedicine, also will be evaluated through analysis of the cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH), by the test of adsorption to hexadecane hydrocarbons. The expression of the results and the statistical tests will be applied according to the presence or absence of normality in the evaluations (p <0.05).
