Abstract

According to the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the term Pain and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) is characterized for a subgroup of oral-facial pain, whose signs and symptoms include pain or discomfort in the temporomandibular joints. Features that culminate different light sources (Laser and LED) have been used for the treatment of TMD.However, it is necessary to investigate their effects mainly on the choice of the best parameters, first analyzing immediate effect to further assess cumulative effects on pain and muscle activity. The present study aims to evaluate and compare the effect of phototherapy with the combination of different light sources on the pain, and bilateral temporal activity of the masseter muscle and mandibular range of motion in individuals with muscular TMD immediately, 24h and 48h after implementation. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical trial will be conducted. Subjects with muscular temporomandibular disorder diagnosed by RDC/TMD (Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders) will be allocated into 4 groups, each containing 18 individuals, randomly selected and stratified by the method of sealed envelopes. Reviews will be performed using a visual analogue scale, algometry, electromyography and pachymetry. The protocol with application of phototherapy will be applied in a single session, and the evaluations will be conducted at four different times, before, immediately after, 24 and 48h after phototherapy. The variables that will be investigated will be pain, muscle activity and range of motion. Data analysis will be performed adopting a significance level of 5%
