Abstract

This project will analyze and interpret the participation of the Brazilian nation in the seventh Universal Exhibition held in Paris during the second half of 1937, the called "Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne" (International Exposition of Arts and Techniques of Modern Life ). This fair which had the participation of 44 nations and the presence of 31 million visitors was a mark in the expression of modern art, and serves as a yard for displaying various scientific and technological innovations. The impact and visibility given to the cultural manifestations of the various countries represented in each pavilion became the exhibition not only a showcase for the display of goods worldwide as well as an arena for ideological confrontation between National Socialism and Communism, Fascism and Liberalism. As a source for research, will be used journals contemporaneous with the event, such as the newspaper "Le Figaro" and French magazine "Paris Exposition in 1937 and arts et techniques dans la vie moderne" and Brazilian newspapers "Correio da Manhã" and "O Estado de São Paulo", all engaged in coverage this world fair. To interpret the information presented in the sources, two concepts have been proposed - The concept of "nation as imagined political community" and "phantasmagoria".
