Qorpo-Santo and Brazilian theatrical scene of nineteenth-century

Abstract

The research proposes an investigation on dramaturgy of José Joaquim Campos Leão, cognominated Qorpo-Santo (1829-1883), with emphasis on its connections with the Brazilian nineteenth-century theater, especially in relation to popular dramatic genres. We start from the hypothesis that Qorpo-Santo´s uniqueness, sanctioned by many critics, not derived from a radical departure from the aesthetic tendencies of his time, but from circumstances that have prevented the dissemination of his oeuvre among his contemporaries. Thus, a historical study of the complete theater Qorpo-Santo will be held - considering his seventeen comedies - through documental research of his Ensiqlopédia and periodicals mentioned in it. In the first source, we search notes of Qorpo Santo's aesthetic project; in the second, ads of theatrical performances and discussions that give shows of tendencies and aesthetic judgments outstanding cultural means which the author had access - the frame time is 1855 a 1877. The assessment of journals will also provide subsidies to the discussion of the concept of artistic and literary field (BOURDIEU, 1996) as a way of trying to restore the cultural environment at the time of Qorpo-Santo, focusing on the most popular genres in the period and its dialogue with Qorpo-Santo's theater. For this, a particular perspective on literary history, who consider the modes of production and circulation of the work (or not) and the importance of culture in decoding the texts (Chartier, 1990), assumptions that are worked by the "Circulação Transatlântica dos Impressos - a globalização da cultura no século XIX (1789-1914)", to which this research is linked. Therefore, we intend to deduce concrete references to assess the points of consonance and dissonance between his drama and his period, contributing to a new critical eye on the theater of Qorpo-Santo.
