Determination of the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) by passive sampling methodology in the Vale do Rio Cabuçu, São Paulo

Abstract

The valley of the Rio do Cabuçu is an urban area of the São Paulo municipality where the environmental contamination is a problem serious. Aware of the impact of this contamination on their quality of life, the associations of neighborhood, represented for by "Agenda 21 - Vale do Rio Cabuçu", searched the School of Medicine of São Paulo University for orientation about the possible actions for investigation of effects and minimization of this contamination. Thus, recognizing the requirement to research and strong potential to improve the community involvement with environmental health issues we planning project to characterise local atmospheric contamination and identify its effects on health of habitants. In this project we will determine the concentration of NO2 and O3 using passive sampling methodology. We propose use the passive sampling methodology of pollutants for evaluation of environmental quality because is a methodology simple, has small cost and high potential for environmental education. Our expectation is that at the end of project, happen public awareness about air contamination; the population understand the monitoring of air quality and also the transfer of scientific knowledge.
