Abstract

Our proposition is the creation of a glossary of Portuguese words suffixed with -mento, which is to be part of a future Etymological Dictionary of the Portuguese Language being develop by the Núcleo de Apoio à Pesquisa em Etimologia e História da Língua Portuguesa - NEHiLP, a group linked to the Pró-reitoria de Pesquisa of USP, whose leader is Prof. Dr. Mario Eduardo Viaro, and the aim of which is to develop a reference dictionary similar to those already published in other European languages, and thus supply the lack of such works in our country. Our work will be done with the use of corpora collected by Freitas (2008 and 2014), following an etymological, historical and linguistic perspective. From our PhD research, we have confirmed the hypothesis that most of the -mento ending words which will be lexicographically described are related to the paraphrase "action of X", or derived from it, in which X is a verbal base. This conclusion will allow us to elaborate a precise description of the terms in Portuguese, with the aim of making its microstructure with an etymological and historical content. There are some recent works in the field of lexicography done in a diachronic perspective, but none of them encompasses the whole context of Portuguese language, such as the NEHiLP project does. Thus, our aim is to create the etymological dictionary of the words ending in -mento, with around 3,000 entries, the microstructure of which will present their origin, etymon, date of creation or insertion through borrowing, dated orthographical varieties with context, in order to help creating the above mentioned Etymological Dictionary of the Portuguese Language.
