The chemistry of gold offers unique opportunities in catalysis and excellent alternative for the development of viable industrial processes for conversion of renewable biomass into bio-based chemicals, in particular through oxidation reactions. Gold nanocatalysts have demonstrated excellent catalytic properties and high selectivity in various reactions, especially catalytic oxidations, although gold still has a limited impact on industrial catalysis. One of the limitations in the practical use of gold as catalyst in oxidations is the low activity of gold in the absence of base, which can cause degradation of the catalyst and undesired side reactions. This post-doctoral research project falls within the current FAPESP process number 2012/08691-0 - "Exploring the chemistry of gold and its unique opportunities in catalysis for conversion of biomass to biobased chemicals". The main objectives are the development of catalytic systems based gold, to study the effect of addition of base on selectivity and catalyst stability in the oxidation of alcohols and sugars, and look for alternatives to avoid the use of base, for example, the effect of using basic solid supports. The selective oxidations are one of the most important functional group transformations in organic chemistry, being crucial in industrial processes for the generation of important intermediates. The use of catalysts enables the use of green oxidants such as molecular oxygen, producing only water as by-product. (AU)
