Canto da Saudade (1952): the folklore and the vision about Brazil in the Humberto Mauro's movie

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Canto da Saudade movie (1952), which was the last film directed by Humberto Mauro (1897-1983), examining its aesthetic and ideological aspects. We seek understand, in this work is considering the least analyzed work in the Humberto Mauro's filmography, the place of folklore and popular culture from the perspective of construction certain Brazilian identity, a frequent perspective in other works of film maker, such as a short-films group called Brasilianas. From of the decoupage work to analyses of written sources and bibliography was produced about this theme, we going to find recognize a relation among this work and academic and institutional debate about Brazilian folklore in the post-war period, then study the options and themes which were dealt with Humberto Mauro's work Canto da Saudade. Goal to understand the film maker project (in this case), we intent to identify the reasons which were allowed him to enhance a Brazilian identity mainly rural, considering the connections among film maker with federal organ and National Institute of Educational Cinema (INCE - Instituto Nacional de Cinema Educativo), as well as some discussions about trends of Brazilian cinematography industry in the fifties (1950's).
