Abstract

This project aims to study the artistic, literary and educational heritage and to translate directly from Russian letters , excerpts from diaries and essays written by Leopold Antonovich Sulerzhitsky (1872-1916) , one of the greatest theatrical and educational masters of the early twentieth century , key figure in the formation of various concepts of the "system " of Konstantin Stanislavsky (1863-1938) and in the artistic and ethical pursuit of Russian theater of his time. Educator , artist , writer and stage director deeply connected to the artistic and cultural life of his time , Leopold Sulerzhitsky participated intensely of the activities of the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT) and became responsible for spreading Tolstoyan trend elements among actors who guided . He was esteemed and respected by writers like Lev Tolstoy (1828-1910) , Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) and Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) , with whom maintained contact and correspondence. His commitment to ethics and aesthetics as well as the search for deep human relationships within the art , renewed theatrical environment and brought to light an important paradigm change which is until now essential to the director's function: the inseparability between pedagogy and creation. Based on the study of great theoretical and critical mass of important Russian theatre critics and historians such as Pavel Markov , Konstantin Rudnitsky and Elena Poliakova, still unpublished in Portuguese , it is intended to introduce the Russian theoretical approaches of the role played by Leopold Sulerzhitsky in the cultural life of Russia of the first two decades of the twentieth century. Translations provided by the project will bring about the confluences between Leopold Sulerzhitsky and Konstantin Stanislavsky, the interconnection between the theatrical aesthetic and philosophical ethics and the fundamental influence that Lev Tolstoy (1828-1910) exerted on the personality of Stanislavsky via Sulerzhitsky .
