Birds are involved in many important ecosystem functions that help sustain many ecosystems on Earth. However, few of these functions were quantified or studied from the perspective of ecosystem services. The current challenge is to obtain meaningful estimates of ecosystem services that can be used to incorporate in biodiversity conservation and land use management policy. The frugivorous birds can be considered a major seed dispersers in tropical forests, contributing to regeneration and resilience of habitats in the landscape. Therefore, investigating the functional richness of frugivorous birds at different spatial scales, a large region fragmented, may generates valuable information about the regeneration capacity of habitats at landscape level. Moving forward in this direction of scientific knowledge, this study will aim to answer the following questions: What spatial scales best describes the richness and abundance of frugivorous birds in fragmented landscapes ? Which landscape parameters best describe the functional diversity and the richness and abundance of frugivorous birds in fragmented landscapes? The study will be conducted in several fragmented landscapes in the Cantareira-Mantiqueira Corridor, southeastern Brazil. In the chapter 1, secondary data on bird occurrence in many site within a large region of Atlantic forest domain. In the chapter 2 and 3, circular landscapes with 1 km radius will be sampled along the study area. In each landscape, frugivorous birds will be sampled by point counts in forest environment (small fragments, gallery forests, large fragments), and also in pastures close to the forest patches. Land use maps of study region will be generated to calculate landscapes parameters at different spatial scales around the sample points. (AU)
