Abstract

Atmospheric gases and aerosols play an important role in climate change, owing to their ability to directly or indirectly alter the radiation balance of the Earth. The atmospheric chemistry determines the distribution of important oxidant and gaseous precursors for secondary pollutants such as ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). Meanwhile, climate change may strongly influence atmospheric chemistry and air quality. Therefore, the gas phase chemistry is important for models of atmospheric and terrestrial component systems. Different chemical reactions and kinetic parameters can lead to differences in estimates of gases, secondary aerosols, particle formation rates, as well as influence climate variables such as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), the cloud droplet number concentrations (CDNC) and radiative forcing. The objective of this project is to evaluate the chemical model MOZART in ECHAM-HAM (Germany) and CESM-MAM3 (USA) for their integration in the Brazilian Earth System Model (BESM). (AU)
