Abstract

The dentofacial deformity (DDF) is to change the hard and soft tissues that can result from genetic or environmental influence. The orthognathic surgery provides the correction of DDF and importance is given not only by correction of occlusion and functionality, but also for the improvement of facial aesthetics. The electromyographic evaluation before and after surgery makes it possible to understand the functional changes arising from DDF and evaluate the functions of the masticatory muscles in an attempt to elucidate the functional aspects related to adaptation after surgery . The objective of this study is to evaluate the function of the masticatory muscles of individuals with DDF undergoing orthognathic surgery in the pre, post three and six months compared to a control group 30 individuals with DDF (GE), and 30 individuals with dentofacial balance that will constitute a control group (CG) matched by age and sex with GE will be evaluated. Electromyography of the masseter and anterior portion of the temporal muscles will be performed using the EMG EMG SYSTEM. Individuals hold mastication of a piece of latex rubber 2 cm in length for 60 seconds. The results will be recorded in microvolts Root MeanSquared (RMS), the percentage of the activity of the muscles being calculated. The measurement of the duration of the act (DA) and masticatory cycle ( DC ) will also be analyzed in seconds. The values are tabulated in Excel database for statistical analysis using parametric and nonparametric tests according to the data distribution.
