Abstract

The purpose of this study was to histomorphometrically analyze the influence of bone marrow aspirate (BMA) combined with autogenous bone (AB) graft and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on bone healing in surgically created critical-size defects (CSD) in rat calvaria. 30 rats will be randomly divided into 3 groups: C (control), BMA/LLLT and BMA/AB/LLLT. A 5 mm diameter CSD will be created in the calvarium of each animal. The animals of each experimental group will receive the following treatments: Group C - the defect will be filled with blood clot only; Group BMA/LLLT - the defect the defect will receive laser irradiation (InGaAlP), be filled with BMA and then irradiated again; Group BMA/AB/LLLT - the defect will receive laser irradiation, be filled with AB graft combined with BMA and then irradiated again. All animals will be euthanized at 30 days postoperative (n = 10). Histometric and histologic analyses will be performed. Amount of newly formed bone (NFB) will be calculated as a percentage of the total area (TA) of the original defect. Data will be statistically analyzed.
