Abstract

This project proposes to study the work of the carioca photographer Alair Gomes (1921-1992), which produced a large number of images of the male body, from the 1960s until the mid 1980s. Their work stands out in the history of Brazilian photography by erotic character or Sensual given the topic, putting the viewer in the place of voyeur. The pictures Alair Gomes provoke and undermine traditions and rigid concepts with regard to conceptions of the masculine, and therefore produces questions about gender relations. For this bias, the work aims to contribute to the study of the art of male submission, on new visions able to deconstruct the stereotypical meanings of gender, while the part of a conceptual field linked to eroticism. To redraw the male images, Alair Gomes introduces the erotic dimension, exalting the body. Faces bodily and sexual taboos, introduces powerful tools for reflection on the relationship between the body and the construction of masculinity. By exposing the male, Gomes evidence a multitude of looks and gives way to new possibilities of existence of other bodies and other stories. (AU)
