Speciation of selenium and their relation with the time of exposure to antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients

Abstract

Introduction: Among the many factors that impact the progress of a disease are feeding and nutritional status. Impairment of macro and micronutrients may have an impact on immunity that modifies the course of chronic/infection long-term disease. In the pathogenesis of AIDS, a selenium deficient state may contribute to the progress of HIV infection, and as the beneficial effects of selenium are dependent on its chemical form and concentration, the importance of selenometabolomic stands out. Objective: To evaluate the effect of selenium and total metabolites in HIV-infected patients according to the time of exposure to antiretroviral. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study to be conducted at the Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto. Participants (n=120) will be grouped according to the time of exposure to antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in: control group seronegative for HIV: n=40; group> 5 years of treatment with HAART: n=40 and group <5 year treatment with HAART: n=40. Total erythrocyte and serum selenium will be evaluated, besides serum selenium metabolites by HPLC-ICPMS technique. (AU)
