Abstract

In Gestural Phonology (henceforth GF), a CV (consonant and vowel) syllable is a more stable pattern of coordination - C and V in phase (Goldstein et al., 2007). Consonant Clusters (CCs) is in phase with an adjacent vowel and anti-phase between two different consonants (Goldstein et al, 2006); Van Lieshout and Goldstein, 2008). Errors in the production of CCs in children are featured in traditional literature as a process of simplification (Ribas, 2004) or consonant cluster reduction (Yavas et al., 2001). The hypothesis is that their errors in the production of CCs by children can be reductions in the C2 (tap) gesture magnitude of the CC syllable, which are not perceptually detectable. Thus, the possible covert contrast present in the production of this type of structure syllable can be identified by acoustic and/or articulatory analysis. The goal of this internship is to resort to quantitative measurements, learn how to perform analyses with the software AAA (Articulate Assistant Advanced), and also verify which ones are sensitive enough to capture the presence of the C2 gesture and measure its magnitude. A sample from the doctoral project will be used: Investigation of the gesture coordination in the production of consonant clusters among children with typical and deviating language development" (FAPESP proc. 2013/00513-8), which consists on data coming from a typical child, with a phonological disorder, and an adult. The 20 recorded words (with the minimal pairs: CV and CCV) were recorded and analyzed by AAA, developed by Articulate Instruments Ltd (Queen Margaret University, Scotland). (AU)
