Abstract

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are substances that may interfere with the homeostasis of natural hormones in the body. Among several classes of EDCs, important examples of these compounds are parabens and phthalates, both widely used in a variety of products and frequently found as contaminant in human tissues. Parabens are preservatives widely used in pharmaceutical products, food and beverage industries and cosmetic formulations. Phthalates are utilized in a variety of consumer's products, including personal care producs (PCPs), pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics and are the most commonly used plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Recent biomonitoring studies have shown that human exposure to phthalates and parabens is widespread. Furthermore, both chemicals have already been shown to induce ovarian toxicity in rodents. Although human exposure to both parabens and phthalates are well documented, the effect of these chemicals together on ovarian function are unknown. We postulate that parabens and phthalates will be more toxic in combination that alone. Therefore, the objectives of the present project are to: evaluate the effects of butylparaben and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, alone and in combination on ovarian follicle development, steroidogenesis, and oocyte quality.
