Abstract

Obesity is considered an epidemic disease, represented by the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue and is related to several environmental and genetic causes. Studies indicate that the energy balance, determined by food intake and energy expended, seems to depend on 40 % of the genetic heritage. The aim of this study is to check the expression of genes ADBR3, CPUs, PLIN1, PPAR2 link to obesity, energy expenditure and lipid metabolism in subcutaneous adipose abdominal tissue and associated with anthropometric, dietary and biochemical variables and resting metabolic rate in individuals grade III obese patients before and after supplementation with green tea extract (Camellia simensi). The sample will consist of 20 subjects divided into two groups: control group with 10 women with normal-weight and intervention group with 10 women with morbid obesity, both aged between 18 and 60 years. Patients will undergo anthropometric measurements (weight, height and body mass index) and body composition (bioelectrical impedance method), the resting metabolic rate (indirect calorimetry test), the assessment of dietary intake (24-hour recall), the biochemical evaluation (blood glucose, lipid profile, blood count, minerals, proteins, albumin and hepatic biomarkers) and analysis of gene expression by the method of quantitative real time PCR. After 8 weeks of supplementation with green tea intervention group will be re-evaluated and the results compared with the control group. (AU)
