Abstract

The scope of this project is to survey and assess proposals of computational techniques to simulate transient overvoltages in power systems. The computational implementation approaches should be evaluated taken in account the level of stability and accuracy. To achieve these objectives it will be necessary to understand the effect of electromagnetic transients in power systems. This can be done through the solution of differential equations describing the dynamics of the main components of electrical circuits. Obtaining such equations will be taken through the use of physical models established in the literature. Through the study of the fundamental concepts used in Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP), it is expected that the student will acquire knowledge and experience in electromagnetic transients that occur in linear, multi-phase or single-phase circuits with distributed and/or concentrated parameters. The main contribution of this project will be to form a researcher that will be able to improve the performance of electric power systems, through the development of computer simulators that are capable of treating real systems, effectively and quickly.
