Brazil has an important role in the world market with the production of biofuels, especially ethanol. Bagasse from sugarcane, a byproduct of an ethanol plant, can be used in bioelectricity generation and in the production of second generation ethanol. The process of generating energy from burning bagasse is well known and has generated good results. Many plants can meet the domestic needs and sell the surplus of generated electric energy. However, ethanol production from the hydrolysis of bagasse from sugarcane is a recent process, but when implemented will increase production without increasing the production area. In this context, this thesis project aims to perform, through simultaneous optimization, the energy integration of processes for 1G/2G ethanol production and bioelectricity in order to minimize simultaneously the utilities costs and the investment cost of heat exchanger network. In addition to economic and environmental benefits that energy integration provides, the reduction in steam consumption in the plant will result in surplus bagasse, which can be made available for the production of second generation ethanol. The study will be conducted in two stages. The first will be dedicated to the development of a tool for energy integration using simultaneous optimization. For this purpose free sotware will be used. The resulting program will be validated with examples from literature. In the second stage data from the studied process simulation (sugarcane biorefinery) will be used for process energy integration. Finally, it will be made comparisons among processes with and without energy integration, as well as an assessment of energy integration viability in economic and process terms. (AU)
