The recent scientific effort on the development of electrochemical capacitors (also known as supercapacitors) relies on the improvement of their energy densities. Ternary hybrid materials composed by carbon based-materials, conducting polymers and metal oxides have shown high performances as supercapacitors due to the complementary properties of their components. The main objective of this project is the study of ternary hybrid materials of graphene, polyaniline and hexaniobate as supercapacitor electrodes. The research headed by Dr. Vijayaraghavan at the University of Manchester is focused on the production, characterization and application of graphene and other 2-dimensional materials. The internship of the candidate at a group of such expertise would be very promising for the project since the preparation of the graphene materials is a key step for the development of supercapacitor electrodes and due to excellent infrastructure of the University of Manchester for the characterization of the hybrid materials. The graphene precursor materials will be prepared by different routes developed by Dr. Vijayaraghavan's group, such as improved methods for graphite oxidation and direct exfoliation of graphite. The hybrid materials will be prepared by using the different graphene materials and characterized mainly by Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles. The synthetic, structural and morphological aspects of the hybrid materials will be correlated to their electrochemical performances. (AU)
