To become edible oil, sunflower seed oil has to undergo a chemical refining process for removal of acidity and minor compounds. Among chemical refining steps, deodorization is responsible for removing odoriferous compounds generated from oil oxidation, besides contaminants, as pesticides. Deodorization is a stripping process with steam as the stripping agent. Very high temperatures (up to 265 ºC) and very low pressures (up to 3 mmHg) are used. These severe conditions of processing cause thermal degradation and volatilization of nutraceutical compounds (mainly, antioxidants), besides oxidation reactions and cis-trans isomerization of unsaturated fatty acids. To avoid these undesirable consequences, this project aims to investigate the viability of including solvent extraction as a pre-treatment for bleached sunflower seed oil, followed by a mild deodorization step, i.e., under a lower temperature range. For reaching this purpose, this project includes acquisition of mutual solubility data for a pseudo-binary system - diluent (sunflower seed oil) + solvent (ethyl lactate) at 10, 15, 20 and 25 ºC. Solubility data for a pseudo-ternary system - diluent (sunflower seed oil) + solvent (ethyl lactate) + aldehyde at five different concentrations at one of the temperatures previously studied, using cloud point method. It is highlighted that this scientific initiation project is within the Research Project entitled "Vapor-liquid equilibria and liquid-liquid equilibria in oil/fat industry and biodiesel: experimental data, modeling and simulation" (Process n. 2013/12735-5) and will benefit from the acquainted knowledge of the Master Project entitled "Liquid-liquid equilibria of model systems composed by vegetable oil + aldehyde + anhydrous ethanol at 25 ºC" (Process n. 2013/11868-1), which has been developed in this research group.
