Abstract

The constant search for alternative energy sources has aroused the interest of several research groups around the world. Among the various sources of renewable energy, the solar energy is gaining highlight due to its huge capacity expansion, making it a promising source of renewable and sustainable energy. Based on this idea, the development of solar cells sensitized by organic dyes has received great attention in the scientific means, because these devices present a low cost for its manufacturing and a good conversion efficiency of solar energy into electrical energy. Due to this, the organic chemistry arises as an excellent tool for development of dye-sensitized solar cells, allowing the synthesis of new types of dyes and also allowing through structural modifications in organic dyes already utilized, a higher conversion of solar energy in eletrical energy. Therefore, in the project we propose to do a study about the use of Niobium pentachloride, as Lewis acid, in Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions, aiming the synthesis of anthraquinone and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives for use as sensitizing dyes in organic electronic devices, for example: Grätzel photoelectrochemical devices. After the preparation of this compounds, these will be submitted to analysis of structural characterization, photochemistry and photophysics, so that we may viabilize its application as sensitizing dyes of organic electronic devices. We also intend to verify what's the effect of substituent groups, donors or electron-withdrawing, in the ratio and yield of products formed, in the reaction times and in the absorption spectrum in the region of UV-vis. We also verify the influence of different ratio of NbCl5 (10, 25 and 50 %mol) in this reactions.
