Introduction: Patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate have a severe maxillary transverse deficiency due to restrictive action of primary plastic surgeries, requiring expansion procedures during orthodontic treatment in order to achieve an adequate interarch relationship. Purpose: The objective of this study is to assess and compare the effects of differential orthopedic maxillary expander and conventional expanders in patients with bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP). Methodology: The study sample will be composed by 90 patients in the mixed dentition, divided into 3 groups: 30 patients with BCLP treated with conventional maxillary expanders as Haas-type and Hyrax (GH); 30 patients with BCLP treated with differential maxillary expanders (GD); and 30 noncleft patients treated with conventional expanders (GC). Digital dental models will be obtained immediately before expansion and after 6 months of retention when the expander will be removed by means of the 3Shape R700 3D scanner (3Shape A / S, Copenhagen, Denmark). The measurements will include the transversal dimensions of the dental arches, the inclination of the posterior teeth, the arch perimeter and the volume of the palate. Interphase changes will be evaluated using Student "t" tests (p <0.05). The comparison of the initial features of each study group, as well as intergroup comparisons will be performed using ANOVA and Tukey test (p <0,05).
