Analysis of the bite force, jaw mobility and comparative EMG mandibular angle fractures and zygomatic-orbital complex after surgical treatment in the function of the masticatory system

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the difference of electromyographic activity of masticatory muscles, bite force and jaw mobility of individuals who suffered mandibular angle fracture and fracture of zygomatic-orbital complex in 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after surgery rehabilitation. Will be held the capture of EMG recordings obtained from the masseter and temporal muscles at rest and mandibular movement conditions: opening and closing the mouth, right and left laterality, protrusion, clenching with parafilm and maximal voluntary contraction in maximum intercuspation. Bite force is recorded by gnathodynamometer in the molar region of the side of the fracture and contra-lateral and between the central incisors. The mandibular mobility will be assessed with a digital caliper, with mouth opening, right and left laterality and protrusion, all in maximum amplitude. Three groups will be formed: GI - control (n = 10) with healthy subjects; GII - individuals with mandibular angle fracture (n = 10) and group III - patients with fracture the zygomatic-orbital complex (n = 10). For all comparisons will be used SPSS version 19.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) and differences are considered significant when p d 0.05. Analysis will be performed by the test of repeated measurements performed over time and the Student t test. The results of this study may contribute to surgical treatment most suited to a decrease in the period of functional recovery. (AU)
