TEACHING A TRANSLATIONAL HABITUS: A PROPOSAL FOR A PEDAGOGICAL EXPLORATION BASED ON CORPUS OF TRANSLATORS PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Abstract

Intending to observe the social and linguistic behavior (habitus) within the scope of the translation practice under the Portuguese ” English direction, mainly regarding the use of socioculturally marked terms and expressions (Brazilianisms); and to provide subsidies for an exploration of pedagogical training of the apprentice/translator's habitus, we will, in our study, observe a parallel corpus composed by the work Maira (1978), written by the anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro, as well as by its translation into English, performed by Goodland & Colchie (1985). We will also use two bilingual glossaries on the Social Anthropology of Civilization sub-area (2012), built from two theoretical works created by the same author, in order to cross-check the data and look for co-occurrences of translation features which may represent a set of skills that can be organized in order to create a teaching model. With these purpose in mind, we will base our study on Camargo's interdisciplinary proposal (2005, 2007) adopting, for the electronic processing of data, the theoretical and methodological framework of Corpus-Based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000), of Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2010) and, in part, of Terminology (BARROS, 2004; FAULSTICH, 1995, 2000). We will also seek to associate the Sociology of Translation (SIMEONI, 1998; GOUANVIC, 1997, 1999, 2002, 2005), specially in the context of the concept of habitus (BOURDIEU, 1980, 1982; PERRENOUD, 2000, 2001; TARDIF, 2002), with some discussions about teaching translational skills (DIAZ FOUCES, 1999; HURTADO ALBIR, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001) and the use of corpora for training translators (ALVES, MAGALHÃES, PAGANO, 2000, 2005; TAGNIN, ALVES, 2010; ALVES, 2003; ALVES, MAGALHÃES, 2004; FROMM, 2008, 2009; BERBER SARDINHA, 2004, 2010; CAMARGO, 2011a, 2011b; LAVIOSA, 1995, 2008, 2009). The methodology which will be adopted in our investigation requires the use of the program WordSmith Tools, which will provide the resources for research and analyses of data. In this way, we consider that a reflexive observation on the professional translation practice related to Brazilianisms, through Corpus Linguistics Methods, will allow us to develop a proposal for teaching translational Habitus, in order to work the Pedagogy of Translation.
