Abstract

The military dictatorship in Brazil (1964-1985) has left - beyond many disappearances, deaths and silences - marks in the city. Former detention centers, mass graves, unions, theaters, among others, can be conceived as places that record memories of a violent past. The research proposed here aims at searching for such spatial marks that convey not signs of wealth or the glory of Sao Paulo, but instead a historical period of serious violations of human rights. Such spatial marks end up vanishing in the production of urban space and often times they are deprived of their historical content when they are renovated. Due to the changes in the metropolis and the widespread erasure of its spatial references, it is difficult to identify and reconstruct certain memories. Our study will focus on investigating and reflecting on such spaces of struggle, resistance and repression. (AU)
