Abstract

The syncope - rhythmic figure that dislocate the accents from strong times to the week ones - is in the Brazilian popular song since its beginning, what can be noted in several musical styles in Brazil, outstanding Samba and Bossa Nova, main exportation kinds of Brazilian popular music. It's possible to observe the influence of Brazilian syncope on the music's prosodic and, since the João Gilberto's Bossa Nova, on all Brazilian popular music's prosodic. According to some authors, what Gilberto did was, in reality, return to the spoken song started by Samba composers on the beginning of 20th century, with special attention to Noel Rosa, that wasn't a great singer but that reached, with his spoken song, mark forever the Brazilian popular music. The relation between the two musicians was already speculated, but there are many things to study about this subject. Likewise, there are many studies about the prosody's influence in singing, but little has been done using the song of Brazil's popular music. The purpose of this study is to discuss, based on Prosodic Phonology (Nespor & Vogel, 1986), how the Brazilian syncope's rhythmic influences on both Samba and Bossa Nova's singing.
