This work aims the understanding of turbulent flow and spray formation processes for application in direct fuel injection spark ignition engines. To do so, these phenomena will be studied within a continuous flow chamber with optical access, a compromise between closeness to reality and measurement. The ethanol sprays will be characterized in terms of the velocity fields of sprays and surrounding with the two-phase PIV technique. The axial velocity distributions, as well the diameter of droplets from the sprays through PDI technique. With these informations, it is intended to relate the effects of the turbulent flow in the mixing process, such as intensity of internal and external vortices, stretching and deformation of the velocity fields, momentum exchange between droplets and the air flow and how the surrounding air affects the distribution of droplets. After this fundamental study in the atmospheric chamber, studies in an optical accessible engine will be carried with the aim of identifying the influence of other variables such as piston movement and ambient pressure rise. The project also includes the development of the continuous flow chamber. (AU)
