Abstract

This scientific initiation project has as goal the study of coatings from Ni-based amorphous metallic alloys with the intention to protect equipment used in the oil industry, in view of the recurring problems generated by corrosion and wear in that equipment arising from highly aggressive environments at which are submitted. The project proposes to study coatings using Ni-based alloys instead of the widely studied Fe-based alloys. The initial focus will be given to the series alloys Ni62Nb38-XBX, which will be processed by spray forming to assess the characteristics of the formation of the amorphous phase and its adhesion on substrate made of materials commonly used in the petrochemical industry. The microstructural characterization will be performed using the traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM) and (TEM), in order to evaluate the formation of amorphous structure and the characteristics of the deposited layer. In addition, thermal analysis through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) will be performed to assess the thermal stability of the amorphous phase under heating effects. Subsequent wear and corrosion tests will be carried out, closing the characterizations for the assessment of the studied coatings.
