Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) membranes, extracted from the rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis, stimulate angiogenesis and act as cellular adhesion and extracellular matrix. NRL membranes also work as a mechanical barrier to infectious agents, wound healing, bone regeneration and bone fractures. Many studies show that changing the pore density on a matrix, is possible to control drug delivery rate. The objectives in this project will be change the membrane surface via laser, producing different pores density, and study the behavior of the release of ciprofloxacin (antimicrobial) of the membranes micromachined by Femtosecond laser pulses (Ti:Sa), that are tunable lasers which emit red and near-infrared light in the range from 650 to 1100 nanometers. The complex drug-membrane is a new approach on the use of ciprofloxacin on the treatment of wounds, soft tissue infections and osteomyelitis. For the drug release study, the membranes modified via laser will be immersed in 100 mL of aqueous solution, where the release behavior will be observed. The membranes thickness will be (0,50 ± 0,01) mm and the drug concentration will be 5mg/mL. Aliquots of this solution will be collected during an interval ranging from 0 to 300 hours. The ciprofloxacin release as a function of time will be determined using the UV-VIS method, and characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy technique associated with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS).
