Effect of repolishing and brushing in removing the staining of teeth for artificial prosthesis caused by cigarette smoke

Abstract

It is annually consumed the fabulous amount of 73 tons of nicotine contained in 7 trillion and 300 billion cigarettes smoked by about 1 billion and 300 million smokers worldwide. As a result of this excessive tobacco consumption, some evil consequences both in health, as in the area of aesthetics began to emerge in the world population, such as the discoloration of the teeth caused by tobacco use. This study aims to evaluate the effect of brushing and repolishing procedures on the stain removal of acrylic resin denture teeth submitted to cigarette smoke. Forty acrylic resin denture teeth (Biotone IPN-Dentisply, Petrópolis, RJ, Brazil) will be selected in different colors (62 and 69). The specimens will be divided into 4 groups (n = 10) and initial color readouts will be performed (Easyshade digital spectrophotometer-Vita Zahnfabrik). Then, Groups 1 and 2 will be subjected to the smoke of 20 cigarettes continuously, using a smoking machine simulator and Groups 3 and 4 will be also subjected to 20 cigarettes and brushing on a standardized manual device after each 5 cigarette cycle. After staining, new color readouts will be performed and Groups 1 and 2 will be subjected to repolishing procedures with pumice and white spain polishing compound. Finally, new color readouts will be obtained to verify the color stability the acrylic resin denture teeth. (AU)
