Abstract

Over the past 20 years, the actions of the pineal gland and, consequently, melatonin has been widely studied. Melatonin is an amphiphilic molecule, a characteristic that allows it to reach several tissues of the body. There are few studies that have sought to investigate the effects of treatment with exogenous melatonin and the repercussions in striated muscle tissue, even less was shown on the acute and chronic effects of melatonin in the polyamine pathway. These molecules are involved in a variety of biological processes, including protein synthesis and cell differentiation. In this project, we hope to obtain results that allow us to assess the effects of the use of exogenous melatonin in muscle development, since, although studies have shown beneficial effects in other cell types (antioxidant, neuroprotective, permissive actions to other hormones), not yet it is clear if chronic melatonin use in supraphysiological doses can be beneficial to develop muscle and may even be used to treat muscular dystrophy cases. We aim to search changes resulting from treatment with melatonin in the complete set of transcripts (transcriptome) and study the effects of melatonin in the process of protein synthesis and degradation, as well as the concentrations of polyamines (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) with emphasis on modulation of expression and activity of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A (eIF-5A) in cell line (L6) and in skeletal muscle.
