Abstract

The Madeira River is the main tributary of the Amazon basin in discharge, suspended sediment and drainage area. These dimensions also reflect on the ichthyofauna, currently with over 1000 species recorded, rendering the tributary of the Amazon River with the largest number of fish species. Its headwaters of white water in the Andes Cordillera are in areas of geological origins distinct of the clear water tributaries from the Brazilian Plateau and of the black water tributaries from Bolivian and Guapore lowlands. Among the tributaries of the Amazon basin, the Madeira River is the only one with this mosaic of geological origins. Thus, in this study we propose to investigate endemism and biogeographical areas in the Madeira River basin, to test the occurrence of the relevant areas and to support decisions for the conservation of the Amazon raising new information and indispensable, both at the level of knowledge about the species, as to the knowledge of biological diversity, taxonomy and distribution.
