Abstract

The cleft lip and palate individuals, during their craniofacial growth and development, generally exhibited malocclusion resulting from the cleft itself, the associated tooth anomalies, and the deficiency of the development of the medium third of the face. This anatomical condition will compromise the performance of the oral functions. The aim of this study is to verify the influence of the Dentofacial Deformity (DDF) on the force and mobility of the tongue as well as its repercussion in breathing, mastication, swallowing and speaking functions and compare them to values established in literature and a control group. Two procedures will be executed in the study: examination miofunctional from the protocol MBGR, and examination of the tongue strenght, through the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), conducted in 60 subjects of both sexes, aged between 18 and 28 years, 30 with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate in orthodontic treatment and indication for surgery of maxillary advancement, and 30 individuals without cleft lip and palate and without DDF. Examination miofunctional will be recorded through photos and shootings for posterior analysis, performed by three speech pathologists, and the correlation between them, as well as intra-examiner verified through Kappa test. In the analysis of the results will be applied the Mann-Whitney test to compare the mobility of the tongue between the groups and to relate mobility with the functions of breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech, in both groups, besides the T test to compare the strength the tongue between the groups and to verify the relationship between the strength of the tongue with the oral functions in both groups.
